There someone can see the ancient remains of the ancient town of Knossos, the Palace, the small Palace the Royal Manson and the Royal tomb. The ancient town of Phaistos is located 60 km southwest of the capital. Here you can see a Palace similar to the one in Knossos and the famous Phaistos disk. There are also churches from the Byzantine years located in the centre of town and in nearby villages.
Chania: The most well-known sight of Chania is the Samaria Gorge, the longest gorge in Europe. This is a wonderful day out but with children over the age of 10 years and who really like walking. Next to the Samaria Gorge there is a museum of Natural history worth visiting too. Cournas lake is another natural spot in Chania residence that is worth visiting. The town of Chania has many Venetian monuments such as the Port and the Lighthouse, as well as the Frangokastello and the Fortress in Agia Roumeli.
Rethymnon: In the town of Rethymnon someone can also see many Venetian monuments, such as the Museum in the centre of Rethimnon and the port . Worth visiting sites are the ancient towns of Eleftherna, Sivritos, Axos, Lappa, Monastiraki and the Armeni cemetery. There also many monasteries and churches all over the prefecture, such as Arkadi monastery, famous for the 1866 sacrifice of its defenders and the Preveli, Arsani, Bali and Agia Erene monasteries.
Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, being the fifth-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.
It’s well known for its seas and beaches but has a very contrasting landscape, from fertile coastal plains to rugged mountains and a number of famous gorges. There are busy metropolitan cities and also very peaceful hillside homes.
Crete is famous for its tasty and healthy cuisine and this was the subject of study that revealed its great health benefits and nutritional value. There are many places to eat, traditional tavernas being very popular.
For accommodation there are many package holidays available but this is also a good place to do your own thing as the beauty of Crete is located in small hidden villages. There are two airports to choose from, Chania or Heraklion.
Winter is fairly mild here, although snowfall is common on the mountains between November and May. During the Cretan summer, average temperatures are around 30Celsius but can go up to the mid 40s.
